I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

That Mask

Tokyo ghoul Vol.2 - Sui Ishida

In the first volume of Tokyo Ghoul the world is set up.  We have humans on one hand and Ghouls on the other.  Although the humans know that there are these terrible predators living in their midst a ghoul attack is still seen as something that happens to other people, not something that one need worry about on a daily basis.

Ken Kaeneki didn't think that the girl he had a crush on would ever notice him, let alone turn out to be a ghoul with an interest in digesting his internal organs.  But, it happened.  Now Kaeneki is a weird human/ghoul hybrid.  He pictures himself as someone with a ghouls body, but a human soul.

Still struggling with the transition from bread eating human to blood eating ghoul, Kaeneki takes a job at the teashop where he met both his attempted murderer and his rescuer.  Spending time training to eat normally and learn about the ghoul world Kaeneki befriends a young ghoul, only to stand helpless with her as her mother is killed by Ghoul Investigators (Doves) in front of their eyes.

Now Kaeneki must decide which side he's on and learn how to use his ghoul powers.

The last page of this manga is the best.  Who'd have thought Kaeneki's mask would have been so...leathery.  The masks here reminded me of the series Dorohedoro (which I recommend for those who like gritty, dark series with a lot of black humor a just weird stuff).

It's an okay series, I like the more realistic art style here and Kaeneki's a funny character, both nervous and yet the type of person who has to do what he thinks is right.  It also has some pretty funny descriptions based on Kaeneki's love for gothic/weird literature (think Japanese H.P. Lovecraft).
