I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Dreary

Something at the Window is Scratching - Roman Dirge

This is another rather nostalgic read for me.  I remember being briefly interested in the works of Roman Dirge's Lenore comics along with Jhonen Vasquez's works, Invader Zim chief among them.

Vasquez and Dirge have a similar style, though Dirge's stays more true to the dingy and macabre, while Vasquez takes on a brighter more neon snot approach (perhaps why it appealed more to Nickelodeon?)

This was an amusing and quick read.  Strange and unsettling illustrations accompanied by some rather odd rhyming verse.  Some of them were more successful than others.  I'm not as particular about proper grammar as most English majors, but some of these were both off and off sounding to me, enough so that I couldn't really enjoy them.

"So then the spider

and its spectral rider

came across the spiders three

The arachnids made fun

of their brethren one

so off again they would be."

"They never quit

kept on walking it-

into the distance they went.

Never finding acceptance -

they haven't been seen since,

as forced away they were sent."

Although funny the rhymes seemed forced and too nonsensical even for whimsy.

Probably only for those who are already fans of Dirge's work.  I preferred Lenore.
