I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Don't Drink the Water

Witchfinder Volume 3 The Mysteries of Unland - Maura McHugh, Kim Newman, Mike Mignola

Sir Edward Grey is sent, reluctantly, to investigate the mysterious death of another of the Queens agents who was about to award a royal warrant to her favorite tonic - Poole's Elixir.

Visiting the town of Hallam turns out to be more than a country jaunt, however.  When the local law enforcement proves to be more suspicious than helpful Grey decides his skills are more called for than he'd originally thought and determines to get to the bottom of the mystery.

However, the bottom may well be pretty far down.

This is a standard Mignola created work, it's got Lovecraftian and religious themes with a historical backdrop.  The town kind of reminded me a bit of Innsmouth, the people of Hallam had rather fishy expressions, especially the children.

If you have ever had a traumatic experience with intestinal parasites, this may bring back bad memories as well, so be warned, there are scenes involving...um worms coming someone's various orifices.

It's a bit gross...but still, a solid story, great art and Sir Edward Grey is pretty cool.

For those following the continued depressing adventures of Abe Sapien, there is a modern bit at the end feature his visit to Hallam.
