I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Mutants...Magic...hmm...

SuperMutant Magic Academy - Jillian Tamaki

Another great graphic novel by Jillian Tamaki, who in my eyes can do no wrong.

Supermutant Magic Academy, is probably my favorite thing she's ever written though.  I loved the various characters and their abilities, the interactions, and the random almost comic strip scenes, which often reminded me of Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes strip.

This is the type of comic I'd want to own, something I'd read over again, which is saying a lot, since I'm not real big on re-reading.  Too many books too little time!

Anyway, the graphic novel follows a basic plot, even with these sometimes random digressions, that follows two friends through the school year at the academy.  Marsha and Wendy are about as different as can be, Cat-eared Wendy is cute and popular, whereas Marsha is chubby and quiet when she's not insulting someone.

While Wendy pursues boys, Marsha attempts to brave a confession, which of course never turns out quite right.  It was bittersweet, yet also funny, reading as Wendy kept missing all the hints Marsha gave her, whether on purpose or out of cluelessness I'm not sure.  All the while other students deal with their own insecurities, rebellions and minor scuffles.

The ending too was awesome and unexpected.

I really really want more Magic Academy.
