I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Shutter & Chew

Shutter Volume 1: Wanderlost - Luc Brisson, Joe Keatinge, Leila del Duca, Owen Gieni Chew Volume 9: Chicken Tenders - Rob Guillory, John Layman

Shutter is a new comic, which has a cool style and reminds me a bit of the New 52 series Dial H (which was sadly cancelled).  A lovely mash up of children's literature (loved the 'busy town' section), pulpy adventure and mystery I was instantly drawn into this confusing family drama.

Kate grew up going on adventures with her Dad, until the worst happened and she lost him.  Or did she?  When she's accosted by a steampunk robot shooting electricity, three ghostly samurai and ...uh three mouse mystics...she's drawn back to the family home to find out she has many siblings, one of whom is only 9 years old and looks exactly like her dad.

She'd wanted a little brother or sister as a kid, but her dad said it was complicated.  I guess!

Favorite characters were the 'alarm cat' sidekick and one violent platypus.

Chew Vol. 6 Chicken Tenders

Wow, and I thought the last issue packed some punches.  In this volume Agent Chu goes from having a girlfriend and a partner he trusts to being married and basically hating everyone other than his new wife.

By the end of it I was left wondering how it will all be resolved with so many causalities.  Even Poyo, the undefeated cybernetic Armageddon rooster, takes a hit here.  And those last few pages, just what is going on!

Spoiler: Both Chu and Colby get married in this issue, but I won't tell who Colby marries...that's a horror one must witness on one's own!

For readers new to Chew, start at the beginning, the story will not make sense any other way.  And it's worth it.  Chew is definitely one original series and one I would not miss out on!  Page after page it keeps it fresh, hilarious and lip-smackingly satisfying.
