I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Fish

Fish - Bianca Bagnarelli

Fish is a short graphic novel about a young boy dealing with the loss of his parents.  Last summer his parents died when their car careened into the river after an accident.  Sent to live with his grandparents, he struggles in isolation, unable to express his loss.  His hair is left long, the last person to cut it was his mother.  Things come to a head when his cousins visit, bringing their noise and life into the house driving Milo out.  They're just kids, like him, and though they know about his loss, they can't really understand.  When another body washes ashore, Milo needs to see it, like he couldn't see his parents.

A very emotionally fraught story, especially in so few pages.  The art and colors are beautiful, yet subdued to go along with the nature of the story.  Panels focus on the empty chair just beyond a vase of dead flowers, the panels depicting Milo's dire viewpoint, his focus on cracks in the sidewalk, looking at the others without meeting their eyes, his own shadow on his empty plate.  Each panel is a work of art.

Very highly recommended.
