I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

Low Riders in Space (Book 1) - Cathy Camper, Raul Gonzalez

Lowriders in Space is about three friends who work at a used car lot, fixing up, detailing and priming cars for sale.  Lupe Impala is the resident mechanic, she uses whatever is handy to fix up wrecks.  El Chavo Flapjack uses his eight tentacle arms and sense of style to shine and wax the exteriors and upholster the interiors.  Elirio Malaria is the best detailer around, he uses his beak to paint!

This graphic novel is full of fun details, both in the art, and in the text.  I love the character names, at one point Elirio Malaria notices people edging away from him and chases them yelling, "Only ... bite vatos!"

The artwork is very stylized, like it was made with red, blue and black ballpoint pens. It's a cool style that is reminiscent of the doodles many kids make in their notebooks at school, filling in the illustrations on worksheets, or even, dare I say it, in their textbooks!  Though of course, much cleaner.

I loved the way the three friends worked together to create their awesome lowrider, a great message for the kids.  It also includes a lot of Mexican-American slang, introducing kids to new language terms in a fun way that might spark their interest.
