I'm Reading Comeeks

Rat Queens is what Princeless should have been.  (Though, of course, this comic is intended for an adult audience whereas Princeless is for kids).

Instead of cramming feminist messages down the reader's throat (and Princeless fails in it's messages in the end anyway) Rat Queens tells a story, that just happens to also be liberating, diverse, fun and empowering at the same time.

I don't think I remember any of the characters in Princeless being particularly diverse in their body types, but here women and men run the gamit.  

There is even a very comparable beard scene in this book.  Remember in Princeless when A and B were travelling with their new found guy friend and B awoke finding her half-dwarven blood showing itself on her upper lip?  Well, in Rat Queens, our full blooded dwarven hipster/fighter, Violet, has gone clean shaven too, but of course she did it first and now all the kids are doing it, so she's thinking about growing it back, because well, when she shaved it had meaning, but now it's just a cheap gimmick!  Which is both realistic, but also, she did seem to have some meaning behind her beard shaving, and says, "I'm even hotter with the beard."  Awesome and hilarious.

There is an interesting and fun story here, which is the main thing for me, it's just a story that happens to star four (strong, flawed, diverse, interesting) women, who are more than just an assigned gender role.

Oh yeah, and for old school table top RPGers, there is a lot to laugh at here.  Highly recommended.
