I'm Reading Comeeks

I dedicate this blog to comics in all forms, manga, autobio, superhero, art books, etc.  And of course, since I need a challenge, I've decided that I'll read and write (short) reviews for 365 comics during 2015.

More Stories by Hubert

Adrian and the Tree of Secrets - Hubert, Marie Caillou Miss Don't Touch Me - Kerascoët, Hubert

Adrian and the Tree of Secrets is a very beautifully illustrated and sad comic.  It is about a young man who struggles with both his school and home life, all while carrying a difficult secret.

He feels invisible and unknown, but a new friendship starts to help him to expand himself.  However, it is short lasted and Adrian is betrayed and abandoned.  A scene from very early in the comic, of a young man standing on a bridge, haunts the entire story.

Though it is very sad, it is a well told story with wonderful artwork.

Miss Don't Touch Me is the story of Blanche.  She starts out as a maid in a large household with her sister.  However, her sister likes to go out to dances where she becomes a victim of the "Butcher of the Dances" who murders women and leaves their mutilated corpses near dance halls.  For causing a scandal Blanche is fired from her job without a reference, which leaves her unemployable.  She is also filled with a fiery vengeance for the Butcher and is determined to find out who murdered her sister.

She follows her own investigation to a high end brothel where she is offered as position as, Miss Don't Touch Me, a virgin dominatrix.  While she does make some friends within the brothel because of her prickly nature and morals she is disliked by many.

Eventually she grows closer to discovering the identity of the Butcher, but many other things happen besides, mainly saddening.

There is a whole other story involving one of her clients, a man who never touches her, with whom she falls in love, but of course discovers his secret to late to save either of them.  That was a particularly horrible part.

These stories don't have very happy endings and the stories they tell are certainly not comedies, though there are moments here and there.  The art and colors, though, are beautiful in both.

Highly recommended, but not for those looking for something lighthearted.
